Laura Cohen, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor and the Director, School Counseling concentration
in the university's MS Counseling program. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree
(Ph.D.) with a focus on Counselor Education and Supervision from Florida Atlantic
University. She earned her Master of Education (M.Ed.) in School Counseling from Florida
Atlantic University and obtained her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University
of Miami. Dr. Cohen worked as a teacher, counselor, school leader and district leader
for Broward County Schools from 1988-2020. Previously, she served as an adjunct instructor
at Nova Southeastern University starting in 2016.
Dr. Cohen has spearheaded several school and district level projects that have served
as model programs for Broward Schools. Many of these programs involved writing grants
that she secured from both public and private funding sources. The dollar amounts
of these grants ranged from $10,000 to $25,000. In addition to securing these funds,
Dr. Cohen also served as the Career and Technical Education administrator of her school
which included overseeing the budget of Perkins grant funding. As a passionate advocate
for evidence-based practices in school counseling, Dr. Cohen has contributed significantly
to the field through advocacy and professional presentations at the district and state
levels. She was recognized as the school counseling administrator of the year for
Broward County Schools in 2018, and as the State-Wide Advocate of the Year by the
Florida School Counselor Association in 2019.
