Ethnic Minority Association of Graduate Students

Nova Southeastern University's Ethnic Minority Association of Graduate Students (EMAGS) was founded in 1994 to address the unique needs of communities in the contexts of the health service psychology, school psychology, and mental health fields.

Our mission is rooted in the belief that academic and clinical training should reflect and respond to the needs of the communities we serve. Additionally, EMAGS helps graduate students expand their knowledge in providing services for people across all populations that are discriminated against. We host several events that provide students with new methods, concepts, and services in the treatment and assessment of people regardless of their backgrounds. We strongly believe that our education, clinical training, and research should reflect factors and issues demonstrated by the unique worldview of our present and future clients.

Through our annual luncheon meetings and monthly events, we aim to increase students' awareness of the need to develop specific communication/helping styles and accommodate differences in expectancies in psychotherapy/counseling. EMAGS not only serves as a medium to disseminate information, but also facilitates the building of a regional network of students interested in issues that are unaddressed within our communities.

Through this organization, we aim to amplify voices, share resources, and promote meaningful dialogue on access, best practices, context factors, heritage, and community-informed advocacy in psychological practice.
