Education:
Douglas Flemons is Professor Emeritus of Family Therapy, Former Clinical Professor of Family Medicine, and Former Co-Director (with Dr. Scott Poland) of the NSU Office of Suicide and Violence Prevention. He is the co-editor, with his wife and colleague, Dr. Shelley Green, of three editions of Quickies: The Handbook of Brief Sex Therapy (Norton) and co-author, with Dr. Len Gralnik, of Relational Suicide Assessment (Norton). He is author of books on composition (Writing Between the Lines—Norton), hypnosis (Of One Mind and The Heart and Mind of Hypnotherapy—Norton), psychotherapy and Eastern philosophy (Completing Distinctions—Shambhala), and, most recently (2026), empathy (Empathic Engagement in Clinical Practice--APA).
He presents nationally and internationally on a variety of topics, and, since 1993, has offered an (almost) annual Florida-Board-approved 50-hour hypnosis intensive, Inviting Connection, Inventing Change. Dr. Flemons and his wife live in North Carolina, co-directing their private practice and training institute, Context Consultants.
In 2021, the American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis awarded Dr. Flemons the Milton H. Erickson Award for Scientific Excellence in Writing on Clinical Hypnosis for his article, “Toward a Relational Theory of Hypnosis.”
