Professional Interests

Dr. Vanessa Teixeira is a lecturer in the Department of Counseling, currently based in NSU’s Orlando campus. Dr. Teixeira is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the state of Florida and an Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). She has focused much of her professional career working in the mental health counseling community with children and families from various cultural and economic backgrounds. Dr. Teixeira specializes in working with children and individuals who have experienced complex trauma, using Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Counseling (TF-CBT). She has also worked closely with Headstart programs in North East Florida to help children, teachers and families better understand the impact of early trauma on classroom behaviors. Dr. Teixeira’s professional areas of interest include LGBT issues, TF-CBT, severe mental illness, supervision, gatekeeping, social justice, and professional counselor development. Dr. Teixeira has presented her research interests in several state and national conferences and has also published articles in The Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision, Journal of the Theory of Social Behaviour, and the The SAGE Encyclopedia of Marriage, Family, and Couples Counseling.
