College of Psychology alum serving as NSU commencement speaker

Graduated in 2002

A College of Psychology alum will serve as speaker during the college's June 14 graduate commencement ceremony at the Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus.

Monty Baker

U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Mony Baker, Ph.D., is the Command Psychologist for the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) Intelligence Brigade at Fort Bragg, N.C. At JSOC, Baker serves as the operational psychology consultant and advisor to the commander and unit leaders on issues including organizational and leadership development, training, resilience and behavioral health and selection of personnel, and program development.

Baker is a two-time alumnus of NSU’s College of Psychology. He earned a Master of Science degree in clinical psychology in 1997, and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 2002. In 2010, he was named Distinguished Alumni of the Year. Baker completed his residency in clinical psychology at Malcolm Grow Medical Center at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He served as an Air Force psychologist at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, where he worked as a general practitioner and a substance abuse consultant. He also was flight commander of the Behavioral Analysis Service at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, and director of research at the San Antonio Military Medical Center Warrior Resiliency Program.

In addition to his degrees at NSU, Baker holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Minnesota, and a master’s degree in psychology from the University of Northern Iowa. He is currently a clinical part-time professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Texas, and an associate investigator on several research projects.

Baker is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Afghanistan and Iraq Campaign Medals, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals.

Baker has earned numerous certifications and has published in areas such as healthcare trauma, assessment of brain injury and PTSD after an explosive blast, psychiatric medical evacuations, and family reintegration after deployment.
