The Broken Spanish Club (BSC) is a student-led organization within Nova Southeastern University's PsyD program that promotes cultural identity, language confidence, and community connection among heritage Spanish speakers and students with intermediate Spanish proficiency. Founded by Nakiya Cortijo, an Afro-Latina PsyD student committed to cultural humility and empowerment. BSC provides a safe, supportive, and judgment-free space for students to improve their Spanish speaking skills in both personal and professional contexts.
BSC is rooted in the belief that language is a vital bridge to cultural understanding, effective patient care, and authentic self-expression. Through monthly social events, real-world immersive experiences, and mentorship by bilingual faculty and students, the club prepares students to use Spanish more fluently in clinical settings—including practicum, internship, therapy, and assessments.
By fostering confidence, connection, and cultural pride, BSC equips its members to better serve Spanish-speaking communities and become advocates for linguistic inclusion in psychology and mental health care.
